Vagueness, Ambiguity and Perceptual Bistability

1. Introduction. While vagueness and ambiguity have been opposed in the semantic domain (vagueness is often described as meaning underdetermination, ambiguity as meaning overdetermi-nation, see Fine 1975; moreover, vagueness is fundamentally a property of concepts, ambiguity a property of stimuli or expressions), Raffman has made the suggestion that within soritical series, borderline cases typ...

Optical bistability in axially modulated OmniGuide fibers.

We demonstrate the feasibility of optical bistability in an axially modulated nonlinear OmniGuide fiber through analytical theory and detailed numerical experiments. At 1.55-microm carrier wavelength, the in-fiber devices that we propose can operate with only a few tens of milliwatts of power, can have a nearly instantaneous response and recovery time, and can be shorter than 100 microm.

Theory and Dynamics of Perceptual Bistability

Perceptual Bistability refers to the phenomenon of spontaneously switching between two or more interpretations of an image under continuous viewing. Although switching behavior is increasingly well characterized, the origins remain elusive. We propose that perceptual switching naturally arises from the brain’s search for best interpretations while performing Bayesian inference. In particular, w...

Perceptual Incongruence Influences Bistability and Cortical Activation

We employed a parametric psychophysical design in combination with functional imaging to examine the influence of metric changes in perceptual incongruence on perceptual alternation rates and cortical responses. Subjects viewed a bistable stimulus defined by incongruent depth cues; bistability resulted from incongruence between binocular disparity and monocular perspective cues that specify dif...

A. Eye movements and perceptual bistability

Involuntary eye movements could modulate neural activity and/or perceptual dynamics. If residual eye-movements around the fixation point were not evenly distributed during bound and unbound percepts, they may have altered neural activities differentially during the two percepts. Involuntary smooth pursuit of the diamond during bound percepts would overall have reduced the retinal slip and conse...
